The Rise of Personal Cloud Technology

5th May 2017 by thom Leave a Comment

Cloud technology is the need of the hour and most sought after tool to secure ones’ data after the security breaches being reported by reputed online companies such as Yahoo. In 2013, Yahoo reported hack in its system and over 500 million users’ accounts were affected, this is huge number to say the least. (Eugenio, 2017) This glitch in Yahoo’s decision making as not to make security of data its top priority has cost the company and its users significant loses. This should come as a fair warning to all the users and companies whose data is floating on the Internet.

This exact dilemma has given rise to the use of this technology in general and Personal Cloud technology in particular. There are exactly three types of storage available; Public, private and personal.

  • Public: it is a space where everyone can store their data.
  • Private: this facilitates a specific group of people which is not accessible to everyone.
  • Personal: this is exclusively for individual user only accessible to him, no one else.(Caso)

Personal Cloud, also referred to as Network Attached Storage (NAS), gives the users the facility of storing their personal data in a protected space that is not available to everyone.

There are a number of reasons that are fueling the trends driving the rise of Personal Cloud or NAS. Here, we are going to discuss few of them.

Cloud Cost

The biggest driving force behind the surge in usage of NAS/Cloud Storage is its cost effectiveness. People having tons of data stored in multiple devices, are moving towards using Cloud technology to store and secure their data at one place. The cost of this technology is getting lower each year which is making this technology more accessible to common users. (Caso)

Privacy and security in the cloud

The main reason behind using this technology is securing one’s data from being hacked or accessed by unauthorized entity. NAS makes sure that all your data is secured in one place giving access only to you. We have absolute control on our data which may be our photos or documents. (Caso) By not being Online, the privacy of users is assured and absolute.

The cloud is easy to use

Personal Cloud industry has gone through constant renewals over the years. This increased the consumer-friendly use of the product. It needs little configuration and a common person who is not a tech-savvy, can easily use its interface to store and access his data. (Eugenio, 2017) This also adds to the popularity of Personal Cloud technology among common users around the globe and in foreseeable future, is anticipated to keep on increasing.

The biggest advantage that we get by using offline storage is that it doesn’t store our data Online, which saves us from paying a huge cost. The data also remain secured from any hacks or accidental leakage by being online. We get to store our data without using another device which is a huge plus, considering we already have our hands full with laptops, tablets and Smartphones. (Caso)
