CMS or Content Management System is basically a set of related programs or software that is used nowadays to create and manage our digital content, such as websites.(Techtarget) CMS basically power these websites and enable them to make the necessary amendments in them with ease and without having to provide prior knowledge. (MTM, 2016) In this article we’ll focus on why CMS Maintenance is so important.
Just as we keep on updating our websites and its content to stay relevant on the web world, CMS also needs consistent upgrading for the proper functioning of the backend system which is driving your websites. It seems much less trouble to stick with the old CMS version without getting any updating but the risks involved are much more costly and can be damaging to the entire system.(MTM, 2016) We are here to discuss the importance of these updates which will enable you to smoothly run and manage your digital content.
Better protection against hacks and attacks
Malicious entities of society are always on the prowl for the loopholes in a system and as soon they find it, they manipulate it for their vested interests. CMS not being updated is at greater risk of being targeted by hackers and you may end up paying for it dearly. Therefore, it is highly recommended to update your CMS. As soon as a loophole or security risk is detected in the system, the CMS developer will fix the security breach. This will trigger the updated version to be installed instead of the older version making your system secure. Upgrading of CMS, therefore, is not as costly or inconvenient as getting your system hacked. (RankingCoach)
Updates will bring new features
CMS companies, just like any other digital app, provide new features as well as improve already existing facilities with every update. Sometimes, we are wishing for some kind of feature, at other we don’t know if any new innovation is even possible. So if you decide not to upgrade or update your CMS, you are going to miss on these useful features that may prove fruitful for your websites. (Pineda, 2014)
Get technical issues and bugs fixed
Every digital product is prone to experience some bug or technical glitch in its lifespan and it directly influences the functionality of the product as well as affects its quality. These updates ensure the fixing of these bugs and improved performance in future. Unless you don’t value quality and performance of your websites, keep your out-dated version. Otherwise, you have to swallow this bitter pill and make the necessary upgrades and updates to ensure smooth running of your system. (MTM, 2016)
Cost; TCO
Once you ignore the routine updates and routine maintenance that are suggested from time to time, the extent of damage and the cost related to it tends to increase as well. As, if a hacker successfully breach your security wall, not only would it cost your website but also your customers as well and as a consequence, revenues.(RankingCoach) So basically when we look at the updates vs. cost scenario, it is pretty obvious they are directly proportional to each other.
The most important thing to keep in mind before getting any update is to secure your data by having a backup.
